FAQ’s

Why use Twickenham Touch Typing? Can’t my child learn from online free typing software or a programme I can buy?

Over the past sixteen years many parents have come to me after having bought “teach yourself typing” software and it has turned out to be a wasted investment. This is primarily because the package doesn’t suit their child’s ability, interest or needs.

It takes huge commitment and dedication from both yourself as the parent and your child to learn at home. Most children want to come to a class and learn together.

A lot of typing software can be slightly dull. Also, when used in isolation and you’re a young person, it just doesn’t appeal. The skill can become boring and repetitive. Parents usually tell me the experience starts off with good intentions but after a short time they give up.

What are the classes like?

Our classes are social and friendly. We have fun, we make mistakes, we learn, we may even have some competitions! I also like to keep the classes creative and this can only be embraced by your unique children’s personalities.

Which typing software do you use?

I use a huge variety of software which I have collected over the last sixteen years and I know what works and what doesn’t. However, there are probably only four to six pieces I use regularly which children thoroughly enjoy. I have found that graphics are very important for children; if these are insipid, dull, and boring they will lose interest. Some software allows you to dip in and out of exercises which are relevant to a child’s ability. Other software only allows your child to get to the next level after endless attempts at the same exercise; some children love these types of games but some find them deeply frustrating and can find them demotivating. In short, there is a bewildering array and not a “one-size-fits-all” type of software for teaching kids to type.

Which typing software do you recommend for my child?

There are many factors you need to consider when buying a programme to support your child. I will be more than happy to recommend clients suitable software once I determine your child’s learning style and their level of maturity. I can also direct you to a number of free online typing games which children find fun.
